Privacy policy
How we handle your information.
Last updated October 11, 2026
This policy covers typesettools.com, Folio (our writing tool), and Guild (our recommendation network, which isn’t live yet). “We” means the Typeset Tools team. It’s written in plain language. The short version: your writing is yours, we don’t use it to train AI or share it, and we collect only what we need to run each tool.
What we collect
Anyone visiting typesettools.com
Our hosting provider keeps ordinary server logs (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) to deliver the site and keep it secure. We don’t run analytics or advertising trackers, and the site doesn’t set cookies.
The Guild waitlist
If you join the waitlist we store the email address you enter, whether you chose the writer or reader track, the publication name if you give one, and the browser details and referring page sent with your request. To limit spam we also keep a scrambled (salted, one-way hashed) version of your IP address for up to an hour; we can’t turn it back into your address. We may later copy waitlist entries into Zoho CRM, a contact management service, so we can write to people on the list.
Folio
Account details. Your email address, the handle you choose, and a password. We never store your password itself, only a salted one-way hash of it. We also note the last time you used Folio (updated at most once an hour), so we can see roughly how many accounts are active.
Emails about your account. We email you a link to confirm your address when you sign up (and again if you ask), a link to reset your password if you request one, and a one-time welcome note. Apart from messages like these about your account, and replies to things you send us, we only email you updates if you opt in, as described next.
Updates from us (optional). When you create a Folio account there is an unticked box asking whether you’d like occasional Folio updates and writing news from Typeset Tools, and you can change your answer at any time in Folio’s email preferences. If you opt in, we record that you did, when, where, and which wording you saw. Once you have also confirmed your email address, we add your address to our newsletter list, which is run on beehiiv. Every update includes an unsubscribe link, and turning the choice off in Folio unsubscribes you too. Creating an account never requires you to opt in.
Simple usage counts. Folio keeps a count of a few actions, tied to your account: whether and when you export a file (and which format), and when you click a link to our pricing page from inside the app (and which screen it was on). They never include the text or titles of your writing. They are stored in our own database and are not shared with anyone.
Your writing. Everything you put in Folio: project titles, chapters, scenes or entries, notes, and reference entries (such as characters, places or sources) with their fields and tags. We store it so you can open it again on any device.
Authorship record. By default, for each project, Folio notes how text enters your scenes: how many characters were typed, pasted, dragged in or restored with undo/redo, and when. It records counts and times only, never the words. You can turn it off for any project (see below).
Support requests. If you use “Report a bug or get support”, we receive what you write, any screenshots you attach (which may show your writing, so attach only what you’re comfortable sharing), the email you want a reply at, and your account handle and email. Unless you switch it off in the form, we also receive technical details: the page you were on, your browser and screen size, your save status, and recent error messages, but never your writing.
Guild, when it launches
Guild isn’t live, so nothing below is happening yet. We expect it to involve your account, details of your publication, the recommendations and referral links you set up, a directory listing if you choose one, and any connection you make to a newsletter platform (those credentials would be stored encrypted). Before any of that begins we will update this policy and tell members.
What we don’t do
- There are no AI features in Folio or on this site, and nothing you write is used to train an AI model.
- We don’t sell your data or share it for advertising.
- We don’t run third-party analytics or advertising trackers on typesettools.com or in Folio. The only usage counts are the simple ones described above, kept in our own database.
- We don’t read your writing, except where needed to operate or secure the service, or where the law requires it.
Folio’s authorship record
The authorship record exists so you can show that your writing process was your own. It is on by default and can be switched off per project from the Authorship page inside a project. When it’s off, nothing new is recorded; what was already recorded stays until you delete the project.
You decide who sees it. By default only you can. If you create a share link, anyone who has the link can open a summary showing your handle, the project title, the amounts and dates of typed and pasted text, and how long you wrote. It never contains your text. You can turn the link off at any time.
It is evidence about a writing process, not proof. It can’t show that someone didn’t read text elsewhere and retype it.
Cookies
typesettools.com doesn’t set cookies. When you sign in to Folio, it sets one cookie that keeps you signed in. It is needed for the service to work, can’t be read by scripts on the page, and lasts up to 30 days or until you sign out. We don’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Folio also remembers a few small things in your browser’s local storage on your own device, such as when you last dismissed the reminder to confirm your email. That stays on your device.
Who else handles your data
We rely on a few service providers. They process data on our behalf under their own terms and privacy policies.
- Vercel hosts our websites and applications.
- Neon hosts the databases where waitlist entries and Folio accounts and writing are stored.
- Resend delivers the emails Folio sends (the account emails described above) and carries support requests to us.
- beehiiv sends our optional updates and keeps the newsletter list. It receives your email address, and the fact that it came from Folio, only if you opt in to updates.
- Zoho may hold waitlist contacts if we move the list into its CRM, as described above.
- Ko-fi handles optional tips. The “Fund distraction-free writing” links in Folio go to Ko-fi; if you follow one, Ko-fi’s own terms and privacy policy apply and we don’t receive your payment details.
- Google Fonts serves the typefaces on Folio’s pages. When one of those pages loads, your browser requests them from Google, which means Google receives your IP address and basic browser information. typesettools.com serves its own fonts and doesn’t contact Google.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it.
How we protect it
Connections to our sites use HTTPS, and our database provider encrypts stored data at rest. Access to your writing in Folio requires signing in, and each account can only reach its own data.
To be clear about the limits: Folio is not end-to-end encrypted. Your writing is stored in a form our systems can read, which is how the app displays and syncs it. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
How long we keep it
We keep a Folio account and its writing until you delete them. Your usage counts, last-used time and email-update choices are deleted with your account (unsubscribe from our updates to be removed from the newsletter list as well), and the confirmation and password-reset links we email you stop working after a short time. When you delete a project, chapter or scene in Folio, it goes to Trash and stays there for 30 days so you can restore it; after that it is removed from our database. You can also choose “Delete forever” in Trash to remove it right away. Copies may remain in our database provider’s backups for a limited time before they expire.
Folio also keeps earlier copies of your scenes (“version history”) so you can restore them. On the Free plan we keep these for 14 days, then delete them; on Premium they are kept for as long as you keep your account. They are deleted when you delete the scene, the project or your account.
You can set a project aside (“archive” it). It is kept, read-only, until you unarchive or delete it. A backup file you download from Folio is a copy on your own device, which we don’t keep; importing one creates a new project in your account.
To protect your writing if your connection drops, Folio also keeps a copy of text you have typed but that has not yet been saved to your account in your browser’s local storage on your own device. It stays on that device (we don’t receive it from there) and is removed once the text has been saved to your account. If you use a shared computer, that unsaved copy remains in that browser until it has been saved or you clear your browser data. To delete your whole account, contact us (below) and we’ll remove it. Waitlist entries are kept until you ask us to remove them or the list is closed. Support requests are kept as long as needed to resolve them and to improve the product.
Your choices
You can edit or delete your Folio projects at any time inside the app. You can also ask us to give you a copy of your data, correct it, remove you from the waitlist, or delete your account.
Children
Our tools aren’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the product or by email.
