How do I write offline in Folio and install it as an app?
Last reviewed November 4, 2026
With Folio Premium you can keep a working copy of your projects on a computer and write with no internet connection. Changes send when you're back online. Turn it on once per browser, from a banner or from Preferences. In Chrome and Edge you can also install Folio as an app.
Offline writing is a Premium feature. See what's included in Free and Premium.
What offline writing does
Folio keeps a copy of your work in your browser, on that computer. You can open Folio and keep writing with no connection. What you write is saved on the device and sent to your account when you're back online. While you're offline, a notice says so and shows how many changes are waiting to send.
Turn it on
Each browser asks once. You'll see a banner: "Write without an internet connection on this computer?"
- Choose Yes, turn on to keep a working copy on this computer.
- Choose Not on this computer to keep nothing stored here. This is a normal answer, and the right one on a shared or public computer.
You can change your answer any time in Preferences, under Offline writing. The setting is per browser and per account, so you'll be asked again on each new browser. Folio doesn't offer offline writing on phones and tablets yet.
Install Folio as an app
Once offline writing is set up, Chrome and Edge show an Install button in the top bar. Choose it to add Folio to your computer like an app, with its own window. Offline writing has been tested on Chrome and Edge. Other browsers may behave differently.
Keep your offline copy private
The copy on your device is not encrypted, and Folio removes it when you sign out. On a shared computer, choose "Not on this computer", or turn offline writing off when you finish.
Turn it off safely
- Connect to the internet.
- Open Preferences and switch off Offline writing.
- Folio first tries to send anything still waiting. If changes haven't reached your account yet, it asks you to keep offline writing on until they have, so nothing is lost.
- Once everything has sent, Folio removes the copy and the saved app files from that device.
When two devices both change a scene
If you wrote in the same scene on two devices, Folio won't overwrite either version. It asks which to keep, and Keep both is the safe choice. See what Folio's messages mean.
If your plan changes
If an account stops being Premium, for example after a refund, or offline writing is paused for everyone, Folio sends what you wrote offline and then removes the offline copy. If any change is refused, a banner offers your words back to download before anything is removed.
